How Have I Never Heard Bob Dylan's 'Hard Rain' Before Now?

After high school I inherited my Dad's vinyl collection. There are some gems and a lot of crap. I think I've listened to almost all of it, except for this Dylan album. Maybe it was the guy-liner that turned me away? Anyway, after just one minute of listening I blurted out "Holy, hot damn!" 'Hard Rain' is the greatest live Dylan album I have ever heard. There are plenty of different versions of 'Maggie's Farm,' but none as rocking and lyrical as this one in performed in Fort Worth. Am I a failure for never hearing this magnificent record?

'Shelter From the Storm' features a simplistic riff that appears to be ahead of its time, while 'Lay Lady Lay' showcases inspiring group singing from the band. I looked up a few reviews of 'Hard Rain' and apparently it wasn't well received. Perhaps this is due to all the different versions Bob and the boys were doing on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976. However, I think time has aged this album perfectly. Bob is singing -- actually singing. I saw him in St. Louis a few years ago with my Dad at the Fox. It was ... disappointing. That feeling is just necessary at a Dylan show. He's never going to play the songs you love the same way. Can you blame him though? Wouldn't you get bored? It's witnessing greatness just playing whatever and however the fuck he pleases, that is the true spectacle.

Take a look at 'Hard Rain' again. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how fresh this 36-year-old album is.

A Note to All Social Bands: Stop 'Like-Locking'

Look. We're trying to make it just like anyone else. We put in our time, slugging it out, sending emails and trying to get in touch with blogs to pick up our quality music. At my day job, I'm pitched hundreds of bands every single week for our Mp3 Feature, and I am continuously impressed by how disorganized and dishonest these emails have become. But there is nothing, NOTHING, I hate more than the Facebook 'Like-Lock' Button.

Many bands have adopted this feature. Upon landing on an artist's Facebook page you are greeted by a shiny music player powered by ReverbNation. I guess it's a mental thing, to feel 'liked.' So in order to have this false sense of accomplishment, bands are 'locking' their music on Facebook unless you 'Like' them. I hate this. And it breeds hate. If you want me to listen to your music, but you make me 'Like' you before that can happen then you just lost your chances of me ever listening to you. I understand that you want fans, but it's just a number. Most people have no idea how to use Facebook, so you have to make it as simple as possible for them to 'Like' you.

Follow my advice and you may get a few true fans. By the way ... have you liked our Facebook page yet?

It's been exciting time for two of our families back in good ole' (or bad ole') Missouri. The Cardinals beat the snot out of Texas, but not without an extremely, heart-wrenching fight. I've watched A LOT of TV lately, biting my nails throughout the whole ordeal. And as Monday rolled around I was quite proud going into work with a 'World-Champion' adjective added to my Midwestern childhood home.

That's pretty much all I have to say.

Hey All,

Just wanted to give you all an update on the 'Don Domestique' process. First, a bit of background. Adam and I (especially Adam) have been working a lot lately and haven't had the time we wish we had to mix the record. Jordan is soon back in the swing of music school and Danny is going strong with constant (amazing) jazz shows throughout Brooklyn.

We started tracking with old friend Ben Majchrzak at Seaside Lounge Studios in Park Slope, BK over four days back in early March. At that point Bear Ceuse was still just a three piece. We didn't get Adam on guitar until he heard the early mixes -- then we hooked him in.

You should've seen this guy at our first rehearsal. He's there early, he's got his guitar tuned in some weird-ass tuning, tells me he's always been into jazz. But I was worried that he wouldn't jive musically. Then the other guys showed up. Danny and Jordan shook hands with the new guy and we all agreed to play a new cut -- 'All Out of a Hat.' Right before we start to play the song Adam tells me, "I had some extra time this afternoon and I learned all the songs." Danny counted into 'All Out of a Hat,' and immediately Adam showed us that he was exactly what Bear Ceuse was missing. When the song was over I just said "Welcome to Bear Ceuse." So definitely come out to a show next time, because this guy is a maniac.

So the tracking went well but we kind of went through several mixing crises. First of all, when you mix to a board, you're under the gun. Seaside Lounge is easily the nicest studio we have ever been in, but not having an inordinate amount of money caused us to work fast. I now know that Bear Ceuse does not work fast ... at all. I think we've mixed one of the songs six times (and counting), and each time we remix I figure out something we missed.

We went back to Seaside at the beginning of the summer to work with Jon Altschuler (They Might Be Giants, Mike Doherty, and a menagerie of awesome indie bands). Jon is awesome. He loves Pavement and lo-fi and everything we love. He worked on a couple of mixes that we had and also recorded the new track 'Yes Man.' But, we were pressed for time again so the mixing has kind of been here and there.

So now we welcome back to the Bear Ceuse family Mr. Patrick Crecelius. Pat worked on the Ceuse's first record 'Oh, You Blushed.' He has spent many, many hours mixing our band so we're really happy to have him on board. Pat is currently mixing a batch of songs (via the internet) that we will be rolling out as soon as possible. We will finish the remainder of tracking at Jordan and Adam's respective apartments using blue mics and things I don't understand. Thankfully all the drums are done.

'Don Domestique' is going to be between 8 and 13 songs. I told myself I wouldn't make a full length, but it's kind of turning into one. And all the songs we've written happen to fall within the 'Don Domestique' subject matter. So we'll see what happens. You may be seeing a full length and a preceding EP very soon.

CROW INFESTATION

I couldn't get a clear picture on my phone to show exactly how many birds have been hanging out in my backyard. So I used the one above for dramatic effect. There are in fact, hundreds of crows in my backyard, driving our cat insane and shitting on everything.

A news story from KSDK Channel 5:

St. Louis University is ground zero for crow infestation

KSDK -- An intimidating presence is making itself known on St. Louis University's campus. But this menace has nothing to do with crime. A specific force of nature is leaving its calling card and some nervous students in its wake.

The Marchetti Towers parking lot on the St. Louis University campus in mid-town is apparently ground zero for a crow infestation. It's so bad, the stories are right out of the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds."

"The tree was filled with crows," said student Kelly Moore. "I walked by, they all exploded out of the tree and I thought it was getting attacked. I like ran away. It was awful."

And as the sun sets, the more active the birds seem to become. Crows by the dozens are leaving their calling cards on benches, sidewalks, the sides of buildings and all over Elia Ebrahimi's car.

"I'm very frustrated because my car is brand new and I've heard that bird poop actually chips your paint and stuff," Ebrahimi said. "So I'm trying to get a parking spot in the garages over there, but there's a waiting list so I can't get one there either."

But regardless of how eerie it looks, there's nothing sinister going on. There's actually a scientific explanation.

Experts said the crow population is making a big comeback after the West Nile virus outbreak about eight years ago.

"The crows, the jays, and the great horned owls suffered tremendously," said Walter Crawford, executive director of the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park. "I mean, we estimate 50 to 70 percent of the population was killed and they have returned pretty good...It shows Mother Nature can heal itself."

Crawford said crows are attracted to two things.

"A place where they can find food and roost and a place where they can raise babies," he said.

St. Louis University said it's aware of the problem, which seemed to get worse around Christmas. Of the pest control options it's currently considering, the university is only using one so far: fake figures of great horned owls meant to scare the crows away.

"I heard they're hanging some decoys in the trees, maybe that will help," said Moore.

Crawford's not so optimistic.

"I sure wish I had come up with that idea I'd be retired. They don't work," he said.

In any case, a second owl decoy will go up Tuesday at the corner of Laclede and Grand. In the meantime, watch where you park your car near the SLU campus.

We played in New York last week at Arlene's Grocery.

It was lots of fun. Some people came out to see the show.

My friends were there. We all drank beer. We played great.

It was really cool. I hope we can do it again. I have a video of it.

I just read Catcher in the Rye for the first time. Did you identify with

Do you guys like food? Overland Park has this place called Jalapenos that is really really good. Their dip is over the top impossible to recreate.

Imagine you were in a room full of people, everyone is having a good time, then all of a sudden you see one of those monsters from Where the Wild Things Are. You know, full suit and everything. Totally real monster. Maybe the goat one, the ugliest one. And the goat is hanging out by the chips and nobody notices him, and every couple of minutes he sees if anyone is watching, but he just keeps eating chips. He looks lonely, but you don't want to talk to him because he's a monster and all. I'd be that monster if Katy weren't around. Maybe it's time I learned how to take off that goat costume.

Everyone in the Lab has been on vacation. I am trying to find a job for my habit. I miss my girl. She is at work. I wish I had a job.

I've had a rough couple of weeks lately. I don't think I'm ready to jump into the sea of humanity. I like my spaceship just fine. But we all can't stay in our spaceships forever. We need to grow up and learn how to use our sea-legs. And some of us will die from broken hearts. And some of us will die from eating cheeseburgers everyday.

If I do not make art, I will die. I am focused only on creating the best.

I will fix this, don't worry. It will all be better. I won't even have to say a word.

What I listen to.

In case you were wondering. I listen to music frequently. However, I enjoy it very infrequently. I have radio dial-elbow. Radio is fun but it usually sucks. Good music is good because no one is around to ruin it for you. I have been listening to several bands and artists lately that make me feel good again:

1. Deerhunter - Microcastle ; I've been listening to this album since January. It is the best record I have heard. Period.

2. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career ; Big and airy, lyrically tight, and so much fun.

3. The Wheel - Desire and Dissolving Men ; nice little record from frontman of Denver rockers, Born in the Flood. Highly suggest both bands. http://www.myspace.com/thewheel

4. Pavement - All Pavement ; every Pavement album my dear friend Patrick Crecelius gave me has changed my life for the better. Or for the worse....

5. Roy Orbison - No one sings like this man. Go get a vinyl of Mr. Orbison and throw it on.

So what did we learn today kids? Well, for starters, very little music is good. The band Bad Company is really terrible company. T-Pain is bad for you. Nickelback will give you AIDS and swine flu. 80s hair-metal will never die. The Smiths saved my life. St. Louis deserves its place in the world. All you musicians need to get out from under your rocks (I'm guilty too - I'd rather be inside with my cat) and we need to start speaking to each other. I love all of you. I have nothing against you. We can learn from each other. Hopefully we will all meet at a barbeque, trade songs, and pretend we can barbeque. Someone will forget charcol. We'll say fuck it and order pizza. Then we will take over the world. One slice at a time.
